WAKING UP IN L.A. - DEBBIES
Built out of old fence palings from my nan's backyard that I reassembled into a large wooden sign, the Waking Up in L.A. cover is the largest prop based album cover I have completed.
Painted with pastel coloured paints (then saturated digitally) the inspiration came from the original weatherboard shacks that were prominent in our south coastal towns growing up. The song soaks up the love we have for our small coastal towns, painting them as the most idyllic and wealthy places in the world for our natural beauty and easy-going lifestyle. Man-made city living is a bit beyond our comprehension.
Upon painting and shooting the prop, I then had it placed on top of a texture I created from a brick wall of my own house. A sort of visual metaphor that modern living in white painted houses with no personality will never live up to the colourful and more organic houses of past.
This song was met with great interest from Triple J, receiving an add to full rotation and multiple festival slots.
